What is an HOA?
Are any of you out there part of an HOA? HOA stands for homeowners association. This is something that many people are involved with. They pay a fee every month and get the benefits available. Unfortunately, there are people who give their money away yet still do not know what it is going towards. The following is some information that you can use to your advantage when you have an HOA. If you learn about homeowners associations and what they are suppose to do, then you can make sure that everything will work out just like you want it to. You pay for it so you might as well make sure everything is alright.
By Definition
A homeowners association is defined a couple of ways. First, it is an association of homeowners that get together to protect their property values and their neighborhood. This association is voluntary, but will most likely cost everyone in the community some money. The second definition is a legal entity that a real estate developer starts in order to manage, develop and sell their real estate. Most likely the first definition is the one that will most concern the people. The key word is voluntary. You are not forced to go to meetings or be a part of activities. Do not worry about this if it was going to factor into your decision.
The Benefits
Your HOA fee and the fee of those around you will all benefit you. They will go towards things like community painting and community landscaping. The upkeep of the properties are important in maintaining a high value of the properties. The HOA will also be there to make sure that the rules that govern your community are fair, and that there is no outside corruption that is looking to come into your area and harm you. This is why many people really like what their HOA does for them. It really helps maintain a solid community that will go up in value. If you hesitate about giving money then just know it is helping you.
Fighting Misconduct
Now, the HOA can be the governing body, but they must be democratic. The community must have a say in the decisions that are being made in the homeowners association meetings. Make sure that your money is going to help the community and that it is not going towards some HOA member. The HOA should not be lining their pockets. If you see that the HOA is not acting in a democratic way, and that they do not appear to care, then you have the legal right to fight them to change their rules. Get your other members of the community involved in this as well.
